Writing, Speaking, Teaching, and Consulting

Business Writing: For agencies and corporate clients, design and write marketing materials, proposals, reports, and website copy. Published articles in national business magazines. Wrote and published two books. Consult to the Communications Program at The Wharton School.

Public Speaking and Presentation Coaching: Extensive experience making presentations and speeches of all kinds for 30 years. Designed and taught public speaking courses at The Wharton School, coached student teams preparing to pitch business plans to investors, and contributed to the teaching of communications in courses on entrepreneurial management. Teach and coach presentation skills to corporate clients, including the major pharmaceutical companies and major corporations such as Coca Cola and JP Morgan Chase. Developed special method for coaching entrepreneurs to pitch for venture funding.

Corporate Writing and Research: Designed and wrote business communications for Prudential Real Estate.

  • Created a research report and plan for increasing market share of second-home brokers.
  • Wrote a strategic plan for implementing Buyer Representation in the entire Affiliate network;
  • Developed ad copy and promotional materials for national real estate marketing program.

Consulting: Consult to writing clients to improve communications strategies. Management consultant to all commercial affiliates in Prudential's Mid-Atlantic Region. Helped with strategic planning, profitability, marketing, training, and sales-associate productivity.

Training: Extensive experience training and teaching in a wide range of mediums. Recent examples:

  • Design and deliver courses on public speaking and business writing at The Wharton School.
  • Designed and wrote the Action Track system, a radical innovation in branch-office training that became the core of Prudential Real Estate Affiliate's commercial/ investment training program.
  • Helped design and implement the national commercial training system for Prudential Real Estate.

Marketing, Negotiation, and Long-Cycle Sales

Created National Real Estate Marketing Program: Designed and implemented full marketing program for Prudential Real Estate's second-home brokers—a first for the industry. Result was increased revenues for this group that pays $3,000,000 in royalties, and an increase in franchise sales.

Real Estate Syndication: Formed and operated NASD Broker-Dealer to market real estate securities. Structured syndications to maximize investment and tax advantages, and marketed partnership shares. Analyzed and selected real estate securities from national firms to sell to local investors. Responsible for compliance with all NASD and SEC Federal securities regulations.

Marketing Commercial Real Estate: Designed and implemented unique programs to market office buildings, apartment properties, retail centers, and leasehold interests. Pioneered creative uses of options, leases, mortgages, sales contracts, and tax-free exchanges to improve customers' overall financial position.

Commercial Transaction Highlights

  • Brokered the sale of $5,500,000 mortgage to raise cash for ailing REIT;
  • Covertly assembled and acquired block of 13 downtown buildings for national developer;
  • For developer suffering from property management problems, brokered $5,000,000 cross-country exchange of downtown mixed-use complex for apartment development project in Reno, NV.

Marketing of Businesses: Analyzed, appraised, negotiated, and sold operating businesses.

Computers and Internet

Used computers and electronic communication since 1977 to increase the efficiency and reach of my work. First online in 1983. Built first website in 1996. Keep up-to-date with e-business developments.

Leadership

Chairman of the Board, Rainbow Mountain School: Led volunteers and staff in a successful effort to conquer financial crisis. Introduced new management policies, financial controls, business plan, and marketing program. The school recovered and is now thriving. (1985-1988)

President, Asheville Exchange Marketing Association: Founded and led regional association to foster cooperation among investment brokers, and to improve the quality of brokerage service. (1986-1987)

Founder and President, Asheville Coalition for a Better Downtown: Created umbrella group to encourage feuding business and government organizations to work together for downtown revitalization. (1984-1986)

Also helped launch my wife’s career by helping her raise $500,000 in advance money and writing two books for major publishers (now translated into 14 languages). Created marketing program including an effective Internet presence—and tutored her in public speaking. She is now recognized as a leading expert in her field, lectures internationally, and regularly appears on national TV.
